TVK’s Growing Presence in Virudhunagar

Sivakasi – A Symbolic Victory

TVK’s success in Sivakasi was one of the most widely discussed victories in the state. S. Keerthana defeated her rivals to become the MLA and was later appointed as one of the youngest Cabinet Ministers in Tamil Nadu. Her appointment brought national attention to both Sivakasi and Virudhunagar district, while also highlighting TVK’s emphasis on promoting young leaders into positions of responsibility.

Rajapalayam – Expanding TVK’s Influence

The victory of Jegadeshwari K in Rajapalayam demonstrated TVK’s growing acceptance in western Virudhunagar district. Rajapalayam has traditionally witnessed intense contests among established political parties, making the TVK victory particularly significant. The result reflected increasing support among urban voters, industrial workers, women, and young first-time voters.

Srivilliputhur – Winning a Reserved Constituency

In Srivilliputhur (SC), A. Karthik secured a notable victory for TVK. Winning this Scheduled Caste-reserved constituency strengthened the party’s social outreach and expanded its support among diverse communities. The constituency had historically seen strong competition from other major parties, making TVK’s win politically important.

Virudhunagar Constituency

TVK also captured the Virudhunagar Assembly constituency, where P. Selvam won the election with over 63,000 votes, defeating his nearest rival by more than 9,000 votes. This victory gave TVK representation in the district headquarters and further consolidated its political position across the district.

Factors Behind TVK’s Growth

Several factors contributed to TVK’s emergence as a major political force in Virudhunagar district:

  • The widespread popularity of party leader Joseph Vijay, particularly among youth.
  • Selection of young and professionally qualified candidates.
  • Campaigns focused on employment, education, transparent governance, and development.
  • Strong grassroots outreach through public meetings and social media.
  • Support from first-time voters, women, and urban middle-class communities.

Political Significance

By winning four of the district’s seven Assembly seats, TVK established itself as one of the principal political parties in Virudhunagar. The district became an important base for the party in southern Tamil Nadu, providing representation in key industrial centres such as Sivakasi, Rajapalayam, and the district headquarters Virudhunagar. These results demonstrated TVK’s ability to challenge long-established regional parties and significantly altered the political landscape of the district following the 2026 Assembly elections.
